Will this problem DAMAGE your roof?
YES! The type of growth you have determines the amount of damage. The least damaging are the algae and molds. These growths hold moisture which very slowly causes premature degrading. The worst growth we encounter is lichen. We find it growing on roughly 30 percent of the roofs we clean. Lichen is such a hardy feeder it creates enough damage to the roof in as little as 3 years, so as to cause granular to fall off. Customers are often concerned about the visual damage that growth causes to their roof. It has been estimated that up to 50 percent of roofs are prematurely replaced due to the discoloration. We are finding many people are replacing their 25 year roof in as little as 10 years because they look so bad. Often, a roof cleaning is all they need.
What can be done?
At the first sign of roof algae and fungus streaks it makes good sense to clean your roof! Here's why: As the roof algae and fungus grow on your roof they eat away the base of the shingle and expand and contract with the outside temperature. This growth and movement loosens the granules creating premature granule loss; dramatically shortening the life of your roof. A 25 year roof may not even last 15 years if nothing is done.
How will we clean your roof?
We use the prescribed methods recommended by the National Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association. We gently disperse the solution on the roofing surface. We use normal precautions for handling the cleaner while being sure to apply it carefully to avoid damage to your roof and its surrounding landscape. We do not scrub the surface as this friction may loosen and remove granules. We NEVER USE A POWER WASHER to clean your roof.
